Best Road Trips
Andalusia Circuit
7-10 days from Malaga or Seville. The Alhambra in Granada (book tickets months ahead — they sell out). Córdoba's Mezquita mosque-cathedral. Seville's Alcázar and flamenco in Triana. The white villages (pueblos blancos) of Ronda, Arcos de la Frontera and Zahara de la Sierra perch on cliff edges. Cabo de Gata natural park has wild desert beaches. Campgrounds €15-€30/night. Spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) avoid the brutal summer heat — Seville and Córdoba hit 45°C in July-August.
Basque Country and Northern Coast
5-7 days. San Sebastián has the world's highest concentration of Michelin stars per capita — pintxos bars in the Old Town are €2-€4 per plate. Bilbao has the Guggenheim. The coastline between is dramatic — green cliffs meeting the Atlantic. Gaztelugatxe is a Game of Thrones filming location (island connected by a stone bridge). Picos de Europa mountains are 2 hours inland with hiking and wild landscape. Campgrounds €18-€35/night. The north coast is cooler and rainier than the south — perfect for summer when Andalusia is too hot.
Costa Brava and Catalonia
5-7 days from Barcelona. Costa Brava (the "rugged coast") has hidden coves, clear water and medieval fishing villages. Tossa de Mar, Cadaqués (where Dalí lived) and Cap de Creus are the highlights. The Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres is surreal. Inland, Girona has a beautiful old town. Campgrounds along the Costa Brava are well-equipped (€20-€40/night) with beach access. Barcelona pickup, Costa Brava loop, return to Barcelona is the classic circuit. Avoid August — Spanish and French tourists flood the coast.
Spain Camping Tips
- → Summer heat is extreme in the south. Andalusia and central Spain hit 40-45°C in July-August. Campervans without AC become ovens. If traveling in summer, head to the northern coast (Basque Country, Asturias, Galicia) where temperatures are 20-28°C. If you must do the south in summer, camp at altitude in the Sierra Nevada or plan around morning and evening activities with siestas in the shade.
- → Spanish meal times are late. Lunch is 2-4pm. Dinner is 9-11pm. Restaurants don't open for dinner before 8:30pm. Adjust your campervan cooking schedule accordingly. Mercado Municipal (central markets) in every city sell fresh produce, meat, seafood and ready-to-eat food at excellent prices — shop at markets instead of supermarkets for the best quality.
- → Toll roads (autopistas) vs free highways. Toll autopistas are fast but expensive (Barcelona to Valencia costs €35-€45 in tolls). Free autovías connect major cities without tolls — slightly slower but saving real money over a multi-week trip. Campervans over 3.5t pay higher toll rates.
- → Wild camping enforcement varies. Catalonia and the Balearics enforce anti-camping laws aggressively. Rural Castilla and Extremadura are more relaxed. Never set up chairs, awnings or tables outside the vehicle — this crosses the line from "parking" to "camping" legally. When in doubt, use designated areas.
