Best Road Trips
Lisbon to Algarve
300 km south. 7-10 days along the coast. Lisbon is 2 days minimum — Belém Tower, pastéis de nata at Pastéis de Belém, Alfama district. Head south along the Alentejo coast (wild beaches, stork nests on every chimney, Costa Vicentina Natural Park). Sagres at the southwestern tip is "the end of the world" — Henry the Navigator's fortress on a cliff above the Atlantic. The Algarve has sea caves (Benagil cave boat tours €25), cliff-top walks and warm water. Campgrounds run €15-€25/night. Winter (November-March) is mild — 15-18°C — and uncrowded.
Porto and the Douro Valley
3-5 days. Porto is Portugal's second city — port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, São Bento train station's azulejo tiles, Ribeira riverfront. The Douro Valley inland is UNESCO-listed — terraced vineyards rising from the river. Port wine quintas (estates) offer tastings and tours. The N222 road along the Douro is one of the most scenic drives in Europe. Campgrounds near Porto (€12-€20/night) and along the Douro. A francesinha (Porto's monster sandwich) is mandatory eating.
Sintra and the Silver Coast
2-4 days from Lisbon. Sintra has fairytale palaces — Pena Palace (colorful hilltop palace), Quinta da Regaleira (gardens with underground tunnels) and the Moorish Castle. The Silver Coast (Costa de Prata) north of Lisbon has surf towns (Ericeira, Nazaré — home of the biggest waves ever surfed), the medieval walled town of Óbidos and the monastery at Batalha. Campgrounds along the coast €10-€22/night. Nazaré's big wave season is November-February — you can watch from the cliff-top fort.
Portugal Camping Tips
- → Best value in western Europe. Campgrounds €10-€25/night. Restaurant meals €8-€15 for a full plate with wine. Supermarket wine €3-€5 for genuinely good bottles. Fuel is €1.60-€1.90/litre. Portugal stretches your budget further than France, Spain or Italy.
- → Wild camping crackdown. Portugal tightened enforcement significantly. The Algarve in particular has police patrols checking overnight parking in known spots. Fines are €200-€4,000. Don't risk it. The campgrounds are cheap enough that there's no financial incentive to wild camp anyway.
- → Winter is a legitimate season. The Algarve has 15-18°C days and sunshine November through March. Many northern European vanlifers winter in southern Portugal. Campgrounds are half the summer price. No crowds. The surf is bigger. If you can handle cool evenings (8-12°C), winter Portugal is one of Europe's best campervan experiences.
- → Toll roads have an electronic system. Many Portuguese motorways use electronic tolling (no toll booths). Rental companies typically register the vehicle and charge your credit card after the trip. Some charge admin fees per transaction. Ask about toll handling at pickup. Alternatively, use the slower but free N-roads — they're more scenic anyway.
