Campervan Rental Perth Western Australia's Wild Coast

Perth is the most isolated major city in the world. That isolation is the point. Western Australia has 12,500 km of coastline with a fraction of the east coast's tourists. Ningaloo Reef is the world's largest fringing reef — you snorkel with whale sharks from the beach. Margaret River is Australia's best wine region outside the Barossa. The distances are immense but the rewards match.

Best Road Trips from Perth

Margaret River

280 km south. 3-5 days. Australia's premium wine region with 200+ wineries — Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay dominate. The surf breaks at Margaret River main break and Prevelly Beach are world-class. Mammoth Cave and Jewel Cave have guided tours through limestone formations ($22.50-$24 AUD). Boranup Karri Forest has towering trees 60m tall. Camping at Prevelly Holiday Park ($35-$50/night) or bush camping in Boranup Forest ($11/night on parks.dpaw.wa.gov.au). The Indian Ocean Drive from Perth south through Mandurah is the scenic coastal route.

Coral Coast: Perth to Exmouth

1,250 km north. 7-14 days. The Pinnacles Desert (200 km from Perth) has limestone pillars rising from yellow sand — otherworldly at sunset. Geraldton has the HMAS Sydney memorial and reliable wind for kitesurfing. Kalbarri National Park has the Nature's Window rock arch and Z-Bend gorge. Shark Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site — Monkey Mia has daily wild dolphin visits. Ningaloo Reef at Exmouth is the endgame — swim with whale sharks (April-July, tours $400+ AUD) and manta rays from the shore. Cape Range NP campgrounds book 6 months ahead at parks.dpaw.wa.gov.au.

Nullarbor Crossing: Perth to Adelaide

2,700 km. 4-5 driving days minimum, 7+ days recommended. The longest straight road in Australia — 146 km without a single curve on the Eyre Highway. Treeless plains meet dramatic ocean cliffs at the Great Australian Bight (whale watching June-October). Fuel stops are 200+ km apart — never pass one. Free roadside rest stops with basic facilities every 100-200 km. The Head of Bight viewing platform has southern right whales 20m from the cliff edge. Border Village is the SA/WA state border — set your watch forward 2.5 hours (yes, half-hour time zone). Not recommended in summer (45°C days).

Western Australia Tips

  • Distances are massive. WA is the size of Western Europe. Perth to Broome is 2,200 km. Perth to Exmouth is 1,250 km. Budget full driving days into your itinerary — you won't "quickly pop up" to Ningaloo. Speed limits are 110 km/h on highways but single-lane roads mean overtaking trucks takes patience.
  • Fuel strategy is critical. North of Geraldton, fuel stops are 150-300 km apart. Fill up at every station. Carry 10-20L of extra fuel if heading to remote areas. Fuel prices increase the further you get from Perth — expect $2.20-$2.80 AUD/litre in remote roadhouses vs $1.70-$2.00 in Perth.
  • WA national park camping books online. Parks.dpaw.wa.gov.au is the booking system. Cape Range (Ningaloo), François Pérón (Shark Bay) and Karijini campgrounds sell out months ahead in peak season (April-October for the north, September-April for the south). Book as early as possible.
  • Quarantine at the WA border. Western Australia has strict quarantine for fruit, vegetables, plants and honey entering from other states. Roadside checkpoints on the Nullarbor and the NT border inspect vehicles. Eat or discard produce before crossing. Fines apply.
  • One-way rentals carry hefty fees. Perth to Darwin or Perth to Adelaide one-way costs $300-$800 AUD in relocation fees because the companies need to get the van back. Check for relocation deals on imoova.com — sometimes companies pay YOU to drive a van one-way when they need to rebalance fleet.
