Best Road Trips from Brisbane
Gold Coast and Hinterland
80 km south. 3-5 days. Surfers Paradise and Burleigh Heads for the beach scene. Then head inland to the Gold Coast Hinterland — Lamington National Park has Antarctic beech rainforest and glow worm caves. Springbrook National Park has the Natural Bridge glow worm grotto (free entry, best at night). Tamborine Mountain has wineries and a skywalk. Camping at Binna Burra in Lamington NP ($6.75/person/night) or holiday parks along the coast ($30-$50/night with powered sites).
Sunshine Coast and Noosa
150 km north. 3-5 days. Noosa is the crown jewel — Noosa National Park has a coastal walk with wild koalas (seriously, look up). Hastings Street has restaurants and boutiques. The Noosa Everglades is one of only two everglades systems in the world — canoe trips from Elanda Point. Glass House Mountains south of the Sunshine Coast are volcanic plugs with hiking trails. Camping at Noosa River Holiday Park ($35-$55/night) or bush camping in the Glass House Mountains ($6.75/person).
Fraser Island (K'gari)
300 km north via Hervey Bay. 3-5 days on the island. The world's largest sand island. 4WD ONLY — no sealed roads. Regular campervans cannot access the island. You need a 4WD camper (Britz Outback or Apollo 4WD) or leave your van on the mainland and take a 4WD tag-along tour. Lake McKenzie is the famous perched lake with white sand and turquoise water. Eli Creek is a freshwater stream flowing into the ocean. 75 Mile Beach is a highway — literally, planes land on it. Vehicle access permit required ($52.75 AUD). Book camping at booking.qld.gov.au.
Byron Bay (South to NSW)
170 km south (crosses into New South Wales). Australia's most easterly point. The lighthouse walk at Cape Byron is a must — whale watching from June to November (humpbacks migrate past). Byron's town center is small, walkable and full of cafés, markets and yoga studios. First Sun Holiday Park ($45-$65/night) is walking distance to Main Beach. The hinterland has waterfalls at Minyon Falls and Nightcap NP. One-way rental from Brisbane to Sydney with a Byron Bay stop is a popular routing.
Brisbane Camping Tips
- → Queensland has strict anti-free-camping enforcement. Unlike Victoria or Tasmania, free camping (bush camping outside designated areas) is limited in southeast Queensland. Council rangers patrol popular spots. Stick to designated campgrounds — Queensland National Parks ($6.75/person/night on booking.qld.gov.au) and holiday parks ($30-$60/night).
- → Subtropical climate means year-round camping. Brisbane has mild winters (15-22°C in June-August). Summer (December-February) is hot and humid (25-35°C) with afternoon thunderstorms. The best months for comfortable camping are April-May and September-October — warm days, cool nights, minimal rain.
- → Watch for wildlife on the road. Kangaroos are active at dawn and dusk. Collisions are common on rural roads around Brisbane, especially on the inland routes to the Darling Downs. Don't drive between 5pm and 7am on rural roads if possible. If you hit a kangaroo, check the pouch for joeys — call RSPCA if you find one alive.
- → Tolls on Brisbane motorways. Brisbane has electronic tolling on the Gateway, Logan and Clem7 tunnels. Rental companies usually handle tolls through their accounts and charge your credit card after the trip. Ask your rental company how tolls work before driving — some charge admin fees on top of the toll.
