Best Road Trips from Adelaide
Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale
70 km to Barossa, 40 km to McLaren Vale. 2-4 days combined. Barossa is Australia's Shiraz capital — Penfolds, Henschke, Torbreck and 80+ cellar doors. McLaren Vale adds Grenache and Cabernet in a more relaxed beach-adjacent setting. Most cellar doors offer free tastings or charge $10-$20 AUD which is waived with purchase. Barossa Tourist Park ($35-$45/night) is walking distance from Tanunda's main street. McLaren Vale has free camping at some wineries — ask when tasting. Don't drink and drive — both regions have frequent police checks. Designate a driver or use local shuttle services ($40-$60/person for a half-day tour).
Adelaide to Melbourne via Great Ocean Road
900 km total. 5-7 days. Drive the coast through the Coorong (140 km of lagoons and sand dunes), cross into Victoria through the volcanic landscapes around Mount Gambier (Blue Lake changes color seasonally), then hit the Great Ocean Road westward for the Twelve Apostles, London Arch and Loch Ard Gorge. The GOR itself is 250 km of clifftop driving — one of the world's great coastal roads. Campgrounds at Port Campbell ($28-$40/night) and Apollo Bay ($30-$50/night) put you right on the coast. One-way rental from Adelaide to Melbourne is popular — check for relocation deals.
Kangaroo Island
Ferry from Cape Jervis (90 min south of Adelaide). 3-4 days on the island. Flinders Chase NP has Remarkable Rocks (granite boulders shaped by 500 million years of erosion) and Admirals Arch (a natural rock bridge with a fur seal colony underneath). Seal Bay has guided beach walks among wild Australian sea lions ($37 AUD). Koalas, kangaroos, echidnas and tammar wallabies are everywhere — you'll see wildlife from the road. KI campgrounds on parks.sa.gov.au ($12-$20/night). SeaLink ferry is $260-$360 AUD return for a vehicle — book ahead. Note: not all campervan types fit on the ferry — check vehicle dimensions before booking.
Flinders Ranges
450 km north. 3-5 days. Wilpena Pound is a natural amphitheatre — a 17 km by 8 km bowl surrounded by 500m high ridgelines. The hike to St Mary Peak (1,170m) takes 8 hours and offers views across the entire range. Brachina Gorge is a geological trail through 600 million years of rock layers with interpretive signs. The night sky here is some of the darkest in Australia — astrophotography opportunities are exceptional. Wilpena Pound Resort campground ($20-$35/night) has powered and unpowered sites. Rawnsley Park Station ($25-$40/night) has glamping options too. Sealed road all the way from Adelaide.
Adelaide Camping Tips
- → Adelaide is the driest capital city. Summer (December-February) hits 35-42°C regularly. Bushfire risk is real — check CFS fire danger ratings at cfs.sa.gov.au before heading into bush areas. Total fire ban days mean no campfires, no BBQs, no camp stoves in some areas. Plan for extreme heat with shade, water (minimum 4L/person/day) and avoid hiking in midday heat.
- → SA national parks use a different booking system. Parks.sa.gov.au handles SA campground bookings. Not all parks have water — check before you go. Flinders Ranges campgrounds have limited water supplies. Carry your own. SA park entry is $12 AUD/vehicle/day or $60/year for a holiday parks pass.
- → Wine regions and campervan parking. Most Barossa and McLaren Vale wineries have car parks that fit campervans. However, overnight parking at wineries is not generally permitted unless specifically offered. Plan your wine route in a loop that returns to a campground or holiday park for the night.
- → Relocation deals from Adelaide. Adelaide is a common relocation origin — companies need to move vans to Melbourne, Sydney or Perth. Check imoova.com and transfercar.com.au for $1-$5/day deals. You get a cheap van but with a fixed route and deadline. Great for budget one-way trips.
