Best Road Trips
Blue Ridge Parkway (NC Section)
252 miles through western NC mountains. Speed limit is 45 mph by design — this road is for looking, not for getting somewhere fast. Mile 355-469 is the highlight stretch: Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain (mile-high swinging bridge), Craggy Gardens rhododendron bloom (June), Mount Pisgah and the Folk Art Center near Asheville. Campgrounds at Linville Falls, Crabtree Meadows and Mount Pisgah ($20/night, first-come-first-served) sit right on the Parkway. No hookups. Fall foliage peaks mid-October at elevation.
Outer Banks
200 miles of barrier islands from Corolla to Ocracoke. Wild horses roam the northern beaches. The Wright Brothers flew at Kill Devil Hills. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in America. Oregon Inlet Campground ($28/night on recreation.gov) and Cape Point Campground are right on the beach. 4WD beach driving is available on designated sections (ORV permit $50/10 days). For RVs, stick to established campgrounds — sand driving with a motorhome is a recipe for getting stuck.
Great Smoky Mountains
America's most-visited national park — 12 million visitors/year but free entry (no entrance fee). Clingmans Dome (6,643 feet) has a 360-degree view. Cades Cove is a historic valley with an 11-mile loop road — bears, deer and turkey are common. Cataloochee Valley has elk reintroduced in 2001 — dawn and dusk are best for viewing. Smokemont Campground ($25/night, reservable) is the best NC-side camping. Deep Creek has walk-in camping near waterfalls and tubing. Vehicle length limit: 40 feet on most roads, some sections under 30 feet.
Asheville and Pisgah National Forest
Asheville is the best small food city in the South — 30+ independent breweries, farm-to-table restaurants and a walkable downtown. Pisgah National Forest surrounds the city with waterfalls (Looking Glass Falls, Sliding Rock) and mountain biking. The Pisgah Ranger District has dispersed camping (free) on forest roads. Bent Creek has mountain biking trails 10 minutes from downtown. The River Arts District has working artist studios along the French Broad River.
North Carolina Camping Tips
- → Fall foliage timing. Western NC mountains peak mid-October at elevation and late October lower down. The Parkway at Mile High overlook peaks around October 10-20. The Outer Banks barely has fall color — it's a beach destination. Asheville-area foliage is reliably stunning.
- → Blue Ridge Parkway sections close in winter. The Parkway is at 3,000-6,000 feet elevation. Snow and ice close sections November through March. Check nps.gov/blri for current closures before planning a Parkway trip in shoulder season. Individual closed sections can force long detours on interstate highways.
- → Smokies require a parking tag. Since 2023, vehicles need a parking tag ($5/day or $40/annual) for trailhead and overlook parking. Buy at recreation.gov or at park entrance stations. The park itself is still free to enter — the tag is for parking only.
- → Outer Banks weather is variable. Hurricane season (June-November) brings storm risk. OBX is exposed to open Atlantic weather. Check forecasts carefully. High winds can close the Bonner Bridge to Hatteras Island. If you're camping on the beach, wind is constant — bring stakes rated for sand, not regular tent stakes.
- → NC State Parks are affordable. 41 state parks with campgrounds ($15-$35/night). Book at ncparks.gov. Jordan Lake, Morrow Mountain and Stone Mountain have good RV camping. Most state parks have a maximum stay of 14 days.
