Classic NZ Road Trips
North Island Loop (Auckland)
2-3 weeks. Auckland → Coromandel Peninsula → Rotorua (geothermal wonderland) → Tongariro National Park (the volcano crossing) → Wellington. Side trips to Bay of Islands, Waitomo Caves and the Waikato. The North Island is greener, warmer and more populated. Good starting point for first-time NZ visitors.
South Island Loop (Christchurch)
2-3 weeks. Christchurch → Kaikōura (whale watching) → Abel Tasman (kayaking) → West Coast (Franz Josef and Fox glaciers) → Wanaka → Queenstown → Milford Sound → Dunedin → back to Christchurch. The South Island is the dramatic one — Alps, fjords, glaciers and empty roads. Most campervans end up here.
Milford Sound from Queenstown
Day trip or 2-3 days. 300 km each way through some of the most dramatic scenery on Earth. The road through the Homer Tunnel to Milford is narrow and prone to avalanche closures in winter. Overnight at Milford Sound Lodge if you want to do an evening cruise. Mirror Lakes stop is the classic photo. Fuel up before leaving Te Anau — no gas stations on the Milford road.
West Coast: Hokitika to Haast
250 km. 2-4 days. Wild, wet and largely untouched. Hokitika Gorge (turquoise water), Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, the Haast Pass into Wanaka. The West Coast gets 5-6 meters of rain per year — come prepared. DOC campgrounds at Gillespies Beach and Okarito are stunning and cheap ($8-$15 NZD/night). Sandflies are legendary — insect repellent is mandatory.
NZ Camping and Freedom Camping
DOC Campgrounds
The Department of Conservation runs 200+ campgrounds across both islands. Fees range from free (basic) to $15 NZD/person/night (standard with facilities). Scenic campgrounds with toilets and sometimes cold showers run $8-$10/person. Book online at doc.govt.nz for popular sites. First-come, first-served at basic sites. DOC campgrounds are the backbone of NZ campervan travel.
Freedom Camping
Freedom camping (parking overnight for free on public land) is legal in many areas but only in certified self-contained vehicles. Your van must have a built-in toilet, water tank and waste holding tank. Budget vans from Jucy and Spaceship aren't always self-contained — check before booking if freedom camping matters to you.
The CamperMate app (free) shows every freedom camping spot, DOC campground and dump station in the country. Essential download before your trip.
- → Fines are real. $200 NZD instant fine for freedom camping where it's prohibited or without a self-contained vehicle. Councils enforce this actively, especially near popular tourist spots.
- → Responsible camping rules. Leave no trace. Use dump stations. Don't block access or parking. NZ takes this seriously — the Freedom Camping Act was tightened in 2023.
NZ Rental Tips
- → Inter-island ferry. The Interislander and Bluebridge ferries run between Wellington (North Island) and Picton (South Island). 3.5-hour crossing. Campervans cost $200-$400 NZD one-way depending on vehicle length and season. Book ahead in summer.
- → Narrow roads. NZ roads outside the main highways are narrow, winding and often one-lane with passing bays. Take your time. Don't try to cover too many kilometers per day. 200-250 km/day is a comfortable maximum.
- → Relocation deals. Companies constantly need vans moved between Auckland and Christchurch (or vice versa, including the ferry). Check transfercar.co.nz for $1-$5/day deals. You get 3-5 days.
- → Weather changes fast. Especially on the South Island. Pack for four seasons regardless of when you visit. The West Coast is perpetually wet. The East Coast (Canterbury, Marlborough) is drier.
- → Sandflies. Particularly brutal on the West Coast and in Fiordland. They're small, silent and leave itchy welts. DEET repellent and covering exposed skin at dusk are your only defenses.
NZ Campervan FAQ
How much does a campervan cost in NZ?
$60-$350 NZD/night. Budget vans from $60. Mid-range from $100. Premium from $200. A 2-week trip costs $1,500-$5,000 NZD in rental alone depending on vehicle tier and season.
Is freedom camping free?
Yes, where allowed — but only in certified self-contained vehicles. Budget vans often aren't self-contained. Check your vehicle's certification before planning on freedom camping. DOC campgrounds at $8-$15/person are the alternative.
North Island or South Island?
South Island for dramatic scenery — Alps, fjords, glaciers. North Island for geothermal areas, beaches and warmer weather. Most first-timers with 2-3 weeks do the South Island. With 4+ weeks, do both and take the ferry between them.
