Best Road Trips
Lofoten Islands
Northern Norway. 7-10 days from Bodø or Tromsø. Dramatic granite peaks rising straight from Arctic waters. Fishing villages with red rorbuer (fishermen's cabins) dating to Viking times. Reine is the most photographed village — sharp peaks behind a harbor of red cabins. Kvalvika Beach requires a mountain hike to reach but is one of the most beautiful beaches on earth. Reinebringen hike (1 hour up, brutal stairs) has the iconic overlook. Wild camping is legal and the spots are extraordinary — wake up next to a fjord with no one around. The Lofoten road connects all islands via bridges and tunnels. Midnight sun June-July. Best months: June-August.
Western Fjords: Bergen to Geiranger
600 km. 5-7 days. Bergen is the starting point — colorful Bryggen wharf, fish market and rain (bring waterproofs). The fjord roads wind through Hardangerfjord (fruit orchards and waterfalls), Sognefjord (Norway's longest at 204 km) and end at Geirangerfjord (UNESCO site with the Seven Sisters waterfall). The Trollstigen (Troll's Path) has 11 hairpin turns descending 850m with a waterfall cascading alongside the road. Multiple ferries cross fjords along the route — €15-€30 per crossing with a campervan. These ferry waits are part of the experience, not an inconvenience.
Atlantic Road and Trollstigen
The Atlantic Road is 8.3 km of bridges hopping between islands in the Norwegian Sea. It's been called the world's most beautiful drive — waves crash over the road in storms. Combined with Trollstigen, it makes a 2-3 day circuit from Ålesund or Molde. Trollstigen is open June-October (closed in winter due to avalanche risk). The Atlantic Road is year-round but most dramatic in autumn storms. Free wild camping spots along the coast.
Norway Camping Tips
- → Allemannsretten (right to roam). Camp for free on uncultivated land. Stay 150m from buildings. One night in one spot, then move. Leave no trace. This is a constitutional right in Norway — use it responsibly. Some popular spots near tourist attractions have local parking restrictions for motorhomes. Check signage. Smaller campervans have more flexibility than large motorhomes.
- → Tolls and ferries add up. Norway has extensive road tolls (mostly electronic — the rental company bills you after). Budget €20-€40/day for tolls. Ferry crossings cost €15-€30 per crossing with a campervan. A western fjords trip might include 4-6 ferry crossings. AutoPASS is the electronic toll system — your rental company should register the vehicle.
- → Food costs are extreme. A restaurant meal is €25-€45/person. A beer is €10-€14. Grocery stores (Rema 1000, Kiwi, Coop Prix) are 40-60% cheaper than restaurants but still expensive by European standards. Cooking in the campervan is essential for budget control. Stock up at large supermarkets in cities before heading into fjord country where options are limited.
- → Tunnels are everywhere. Norway has 900+ road tunnels, some over 20 km long. The Lærdalstunnelen is the world's longest at 24.5 km. Most are well-lit and ventilated but claustrophobic drivers should be prepared. Some tunnels have steep descents. Some are single-lane with passing bays. Headlights on at all times (required by law year-round).
- → Narrow roads in fjord country. Many fjord roads are single-lane with passing bays. Pull into bays to let oncoming traffic pass. Larger motorhomes (over 7m) will struggle on some scenic routes. A campervan under 6m handles Norway's roads much better than a full-size motorhome. Consider vehicle size carefully when booking.
