Best Road Trips
Provence and the Côte d'Azur
7-10 days from Marseille or Nice. Lavender fields (peak bloom late June to mid-July) around Valensole and Sault. Gorges du Verdon — Europe's Grand Canyon with turquoise water. Hilltop villages: Gordes, Roussillon (ochre cliffs), Les Baux-de-Provence. Cassis has limestone calanques (fjords) you can kayak into. The coastal Corniche roads between Nice and Monaco are dramatic cliff-edge driving. Aires throughout Provence cost €5-€12/night. Markets in every village sell local produce — stock up on cheese, bread and rosé.
Loire Valley
3-5 days from Paris (or Tours). 300+ châteaux line the Loire River. Chambord is the largest — 440 rooms, designed by Leonardo da Vinci's influence. Chenonceau spans the River Cher. Amboise has Da Vinci's last home. Saumur has a castle above a troglodyte wine cave district. The Loire Valley produces excellent Vouvray (white), Chinon (red) and Crémant de Loire (sparkling). Many châteaux have aires in their parking lots. Cycling paths follow the Loire — some rental companies provide bikes with the campervan.
Brittany Coast
5-7 days. France's rugged Atlantic coast. Pink Granite Coast (Côte de Granit Rose) has bizarre rock formations. Mont Saint-Michel is a medieval abbey on a tidal island — arrive at low tide, watch the water surround it. Saint-Malo is a walled port city with excellent seafood. Carnac has 3,000 prehistoric standing stones. Crêpes and galettes are the local fast food. Cider replaces wine in Brittany. Aires along the coast are often free with ocean views. September is ideal — warm enough for beach days, tourist crowds gone.
Route Napoléon and the Alps
325 km from Grasse to Grenoble following Napoleon's 1815 return route. Mountain passes, Alpine meadows and dramatic switchbacks. Continues into the French Alps — Route des Grandes Alpes connects Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean via 16 mountain passes (684 km). Col du Galibier (2,642m) and Col de l'Iseran (2,770m — highest paved pass in the Alps) are the showstoppers. Open June-October only. Not for large motorhomes — campervans and smaller vans handle the passes best.
France Camping Tips
- → Aires are everywhere. 10,000+ across France. Most cost €0-€15/night. Services include fresh water, grey water dump and sometimes electricity. The park4night app is essential — it maps every aire with photos, reviews and GPS coordinates. Some aires are in beautiful locations — vineyard views, river banks, village squares.
- → Boulangeries open at 7am. Fresh baguettes, croissants and pain au chocolat every morning. Walk to the nearest village bakery and buy breakfast for €4-€6 for two people. This daily ritual is the single best thing about campervanning in France. Need I say more?
- → Toll roads (autoroutes) are expensive. A Paris-Marseille run costs €60-€80 in tolls. Campervans over 3m tall pay a higher rate (Class 2). National roads (N-roads and D-roads) are toll-free, slower and more scenic. Use the autoroute for long transfers, D-roads for the actual trip.
- → August is when France goes on vacation. The entire country seems to be in a campervan in August. Coastal aires fill by noon. Campgrounds are at capacity. If you must travel in August, book campgrounds ahead and arrive at aires before lunch. September is the sweet spot — warm weather, available spots, grape harvest season.
