Top Canadian Road Trips

Icefields Parkway: Banff to Jasper

232 km through the Canadian Rockies. Regularly called the most beautiful drive in the world. Columbia Icefield, Peyto Lake, Athabasca Falls and more glaciers than you can count. 2-4 days with stops. Campgrounds at Lake Louise, Mosquito Creek, Waterfowl Lakes, Columbia Icefield and Wapiti fill fast in summer. Book Parks Canada sites 3-4 months ahead for July-August.

Sea-to-Sky Highway: Vancouver to Whistler

125 km along Howe Sound. 2-3 days with hiking stops. Shannon Falls, the Sea-to-Sky Gondola and Whistler. Continue north to Pemberton and Lillooet for less-traveled territory. Alice Lake Provincial Park has excellent RV camping ($35 CAD). The highway itself is the attraction — ocean views transitioning into mountain scenery within an hour.

Cabot Trail: Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

298 km loop around the northern tip of Cape Breton Island. One of Canada's best-kept secrets. Dramatic coastal cliffs, whale watching, Celtic and Acadian culture. Meat Cove campground at the northernmost point is legendary. The trail has steep grades — keep your motorhome under 28 feet. Fall foliage (late September to mid-October) is the best time.

Trans-Canada: Vancouver to Calgary

970 km through the Rockies. 5-7 days. Kamloops, Revelstoke (hot springs), Golden, Yoho National Park (Emerald Lake, Natural Bridge) and into Banff. Rogers Pass has avalanche sheds on the highway. Some of the most dramatic mountain driving in North America. Provincial and national park campgrounds line the route.

Canada Rental Tips

  • National parks need reservation. Parks Canada campgrounds book months ahead for summer. Lake Louise and Banff campgrounds can sell out 4 months before opening day. Use the Parks Canada reservation system (reservation.pc.gc.ca) and set reminders for booking windows.
  • Discovery Pass saves money. $145.25 CAD for unlimited entry to all national parks for a year. Pays for itself in 7 days if you're visiting multiple parks. Buy it before your trip online.
  • Bear country. Grizzly and black bears roam the Rockies and BC. Store food in bear-proof containers. Cook away from your sleeping area. Bear spray is available at outdoor shops in Banff and Jasper. Never approach wildlife — Parks Canada fines start at $25,000 CAD.
  • Summer season is short. Realistically mid-June through mid-September for mountain camping. Some high-elevation campgrounds don't open until July. Snow can fall in the Rockies any month. Shoulder season (June, September) has better availability and lower prices.
  • Fuel costs. Canadian gas averages $1.60-$2.10 CAD/litre. That's $6-$8 CAD/gallon. Budget accordingly — a Class C motorhome burns $60-$100 CAD/day in fuel on a touring day.
